7 May: Commemoration of the 10th Urs of Mawlana Shaykh Nazim 2014-2024

“Allah created ego [nefs] and asked him to come to His presence; but ego went back. When Allah asked him to go back, he came nearer. Whatever Allah ordered, ego did the opposite. Allah asked him, ‘Who am I and who are you?’, ordering him to declare that he is servant to Him. But ego said ‘I am myself, you are yourself!’ Allah ordered to put ego into the prison of Hell’s fires for 1000 years. After 1000 years, He called him back and asked the same question. Ego gave the same reply. Thereupon, Allah ordered to put ego into the prison [of cold hells] for 1000 years. After 1000 years, He called ego again and asked the same question; ego again gave the same reply; ‘I am myself, you are yourself’, and not said ‘I am your servant’. Then Allah sentenced ego to hunger for 1000 years. When it was complete, Allah called him again and asked ‘who am I and who are you?’ Trembling, ego said, ‘I am your big servant; you are my Lord’ [meaning, ‘though being a servant to You, I am at least still superior to all Your other servants’]”

“Our donkey is our ego.” – Mawlana Shaykh Nazim

The Prophet (s), Habeebullah, what was he saying?

Allahumma laa takilnee ila nafsee tarfata `aynin

O Allah, don’t leave me to my ego for the blink of an eye.

Therefore, we are asking for heavenly support against our egos. Our ego is attacking us and asking to take the reins to make us its donkey, to do as it likes. I am using “it” because to say “that” would give it an honor. “It” is for animals and you may use “it” for that which doesn’t have any soul or living things on it. Always put Shaytan down. Put it down. Don’t give Shaytan any honor. Don’t use any honorable word for Shaytan. That is important!

I am saying A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani‘r-rajeem. O our Lord! We are asking humbly for protection against Shaytan and its followers. That is important. Dastoor yaa Sayyidee, yaa Sultaanu ‘l-Awliyaa. We are saying, O our Master, O Qutbu ‘z-Zamaan, O Qutbu ‘l-Mutassarif who has been granted from heavenly stations to look after this world and everything that is happening on it. Don’t think that this world is just left as it likes to be through space. Everything is under control very carefully, daqeeq, control must be on everything. Nothing can be in existence without its Creator knowing about it. How can it be? He creates and He knows a dharrah, an atom can’t know about itself.

You mankind, do you know about yourself? Are you able to know about yourself? Who knows? People are trying to know something around themselves but not themselves! Our eyes may look around us only but cannot look into our inner beings. If I ask you, “Where is your liver?” Many people don’t know. If we ask, “Where is your heart?” “I do not know.” Man is ignorant, fully ignorant about himself.

We are saying A`oodhu billahi min ash-Shaytaani‘r-rajeem because Shaytan is always trying to confuse people and not letting you know. It has been said that a person has 360 organs, small and big, and yet you do not know about yourself! How come you are asking to know around yourself? Don’t say that it is knowledge to look into space saying, “That is polestar, that is the sun, that is the moon, that is seven sisters, that is alpha systems.” It is nothing, it gives you nothing.

It is not real knowledge around you that you are looking at. How many of you understand yourself? How are your organs working? You are eating and enjoying it. You are drinking and enjoying but where is it going inside? What is its significance? You don’t know. You are only drinking and eating. And you man have been granted such an honor and your honor is to know! No other creature on this planet knows about themselves because they don’t have a mind or they can’t think. And their levels are animals’ levels but your level is over the level of angels!

«We ask to be no-one and nothing,
For, as long as we are someone,
we are not complete.

Visit La Rábita Califal

In the large dune area of Guardamar del Segura you can find a lot of historical excavations. The largest is La Rabita Califal, this is the ruin of a Moorish monastery that has been preserved for a fairly large part

The area is completely fenced and closed. Visits are only possible on request through the tourist office. Only if there is a sufficiently large group (> 30 people), the visit can continue. Fortunately, you have a beautiful view of the ruins from several places outside the fences.

Truth is the Night of Power: Laylat al-Qadr

Truth is the Night of Power,

hidden amid the other nights

so the soul may try each one.

Not all nights are the Night of Power,

yet all nights aren’t empty of it either.

Laylat-Al Qadr – The Night of Power

لیلة القدر (Arabic) Laylat al-Qadr, (also known as Shab-e-Qadr) is significant event in Muslim history as not only did Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) receive his first revelation that culminated in the Holy Quran, but this day marks the anniversary of his Prophethood on earth. Muslims all over the world spend this night in prayers as it holds special Barakah for those in prayer.

In the name of God, the Beneficent the Merciful

“Indeed We sent it [the Holy Quran] down on the Night of Power. What will convey to you what the Night of Power is? Better is the Night of Power than a thousand months. In that Night the angels and the Spirit descend by the permission of their Lord for every errand. Peace it is, until the break of dawn.”
– Quran, Chapter 97 Al-Qadr

Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s) received his first revelation from Allah through Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) in the Hira cave which is on Jabl al Nur (Mount of Light) shown in this photo. The peak is visible from a great distance. The Prophet used to climb this mountain often even before receiving his fist revelation from Allah.

Many interpreters of this verse in the Holy Qur’an state that thousand months is Allah’s way of defining eternal time as it cannot be described in worldly time. A single moment of enlightenment of the Noor of Allah is better than a thousand months and such a moment of recognition converts the night into a period of Spiritual glory and majesty, and every one of us should try to work towards this.

When the night of spiritual darkness is removed by the Noor of Allah, a wonderful peace and sense of security arises in the soul which lasts until this physical life ends and the glorious day of the spiritual world dawns, when everything will be on a different plane and the nights and days of this world will seem less than a dream. This is the meaning of “until the rise of dawn” and not the literal interpretation as many may construe or understand it. Surely, Allah’s realm/time span is larger.

Allah has says in the Quran: Rise to pray in the night except a little (73:1)

Allah ordered Prophet Muhammad (salwaat) to spend most of the night in worship in order that his Lord may lift him to a higher elevation. Hazrat Ali (salwaat) and others would join him for the nightly meditation (Baitul Khayal) and would be rising up in station and spirituality: Surely We will make to descend on you a weighty Word. Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. (73, 1-5).

Rumi-Your hair is Laylat al-Qadr

It’s morning and there’s wine so we’re going to stand on the sky
We’re going to go beyond Taurus to the constellation of the moon
We’re not looking for a fight, and have nothing to say about others
For it’s time for union, and with that we’ll be glad
Your face is a garden of roses, and your lip a land of sugar
We all become like sweet flowers in the shadow of these two
The sun of your sweet face is as boundless as the sun’s beams
So we have to stay up with you all night just like the moon
Your hair is the Night of Destiny, your face is a new day (Nawruz)
We’re between her day and night, just like the dawn
We don’t know this face, because you appeared in that one
But if you appear in another way, we’ll come by another way
You are the sun of the world and we are but hidden specks of dust
Shine on these specks, so that we can be seen
When the sun is lost and bedazzled by your face
It’s no wonder that we specks of dust are all love-dazed
I said, “When you come, you will open 200 doors.”
They said, “This is true, but only if we come…”
I said, “Just as the sea does not come to the stream,
We, like the flowing water, will journey forth to her
O herald of the unseen, speak, so that we
From your glad tidings and good news, will be glad, blissfully.

During Laylatul Qadr Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is reported to have instructed Muslims to say abundantly: ‘O Allah You are The One Who forgives greatly, and loves to forgive, so forgive me’.

In Islam, the duty of seeking knowledge & learning is obligatory for every Muslim. Islam affirms the right to education for all, without discrimination. Remember, the first word of the Qur’an revealed to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was “Iqra” which means ‘Read.’

Read: In the name of thy Lord who created. Created man from a leech like clot. Read: And your Lord is the Most Bountiful. He taught by the pen. He taught man which he knew not’ (Al-`Alaq 96:1-5)
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said of Laylat-al-Qadr “Look for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan.” (Bukhari).

A Donkey’s Tail with Angel’s Wing

From Rumi’s World by Annemarie Schimmel

This is an impressive image by Rumi, for it portrays the human condition, the fact that the only creature with a certain amount of free will is situated between beast and angel, between the world of pure matter and that of pure spirit. If he follows his lower instincts, he will fall deeper than any animal, for the animals are constrained in their actions and have no choice. If, however, he purifies himself and develops his God-given spiritual qualities, he will reach a station higher than the angels, for angels, too, cannot act according to their own inclination; their role of constant worship and obedience is once and for all prescribed. Humans, however, have to wander along an extremely narrow path as they choose between good and evil, matter and spirit; they are, as Maulana says, like ducks, which belong to both water and earth; or else they are half honeybee, half snake, capable of producing both honey and venom.
Did not the angels cry out in horror when the Lord told them at the beginning of time that He would place a vice-regent on earth, whereupon they foresaw that the new creature would he “bloodshedding and ignorant” (Sura 2/31)?

But God knew better what He was planning, and so the angels had to prostrate themselves before the newly created Adam, who thus became masjud al-mala’ika, “the one before whom the angels fell down.” He was singled out by the Divine Word in the Koran: karamna, “We have honored the children of Adam” (Sura 17/70). Maulana reminds his listeners time and again of this Divine Word, and he sees the greatest danger to humanity in the risk of their forgetting the high position allotted to them by God. God “taught Adam the names” (Sura 2/32). Read more here….
